Best Time to Trim Hedges in Hampshire – Seasonal Hedge Cutting Guide

Best Time to Trim Hedges in Hampshire

Knowing when to trim your hedges is key to keeping them healthy, dense, and looking their best. In Hampshire, our climate and growing season follow a predictable pattern, which makes it easier to plan your hedge maintenance. Get the timing right and your hedges will reward you with lush, dense growth all year round.

General Hedge Trimming Timeline for Hampshire

Most hedges in Hampshire benefit from trimming once or twice a year. Here's a general timeline:

  • Late Spring (May): First light trim to shape fast-growing hedges

  • Late Summer (August–September): Main trim to tidy hedges before winter

  • Winter (December–February): Hard pruning for deciduous hedges when dormant

  • Avoid March–April: Birds are nesting — it's illegal to disturb nesting birds

When to Trim Different Hedge Types

Privet Hedges

Privet grows fast and may need trimming 2–3 times between May and September. For a neat, formal privet hedge in Southampton or Winchester, trim every 6–8 weeks during the growing season.

Laurel Hedges

Laurel hedges are best trimmed once a year in late summer (August). Cut back to just below the desired height — laurel responds well to pruning and will produce dense new growth the following spring.

Box (Buxus) Hedges

Box hedges should be trimmed in late May or early June, once the risk of frost has passed. A second light trim in September will keep them crisp through winter.

Leylandii and Conifer Hedges

Leylandii is the fastest-growing hedge in Hampshire and needs trimming once or twice a year. Trim in May and again in August. Never cut back into old brown wood — Leylandii won't regrow from bare wood.

Beech and Hornbeam Hedges

Deciduous hedges like beech and hornbeam are best pruned in late winter (February) when dormant. A second trim in August will keep them tidy. Beech keeps its brown leaves through winter, providing year-round screening.

Hawthorn Hedges

Hawthorn can be trimmed in summer after flowering. For a formal hedge, trim twice — once in June and again in September. For informal hedges, an annual trim is sufficient.

Important: Birds and the Law

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it's an offence to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it's in use or being built. In Hampshire, most birds nest between March and August.

Always check your hedges for nesting birds before trimming. If you see birds flying in and out of a hedge, leave it alone until the young have fledged. This is one of the main reasons we recommend scheduling hedge trimming for late summer when nesting season is over.

How Often Should Hedges Be Trimmed?

The frequency depends on the hedge type and how formal you want it to look:

  • Fast-growing hedges (Privet, Leylandii): 2–3 times per year

  • Medium-growing hedges (Laurel, Hawthorn): 1–2 times per year

  • Slow-growing hedges (Box, Yew): 1–2 times per year

  • Deciduous hedges (Beech, Hornbeam): 1 time per year (winter)
